Stress is something that is pretty much unavoidable in our daily lives. However, there are some steps that you can take to improve your mentality and reactions towards stress. We’ll take a look at several different things you can do to reduce the impact that stressful situations have on you.
Look at the situation from a broader perspective
When you are in the midst of a stressful situation, it can be hard to understand things from another perspective. Stressful situations are usually unpleasant emotional situations. When we are feeling intense emotions, situations can easily be escalated in ways that we may regret later on.
One effective method of handling situations is to look at the events from a third-person perspective. If you were a judge for a case, how would you view your stance against the other person’s stance? Viewing things from another perspective helps us to eliminate some of the extra emotions that come with the situation. When the situation becomes less emotionally-driven, we can make better choices on what is rational from what isn’t.
One-sided stressful situations
So, what if the stressful situation isn’t caused by a person? A lot of times, stressful situations can be caused by things like deadlines, meetings, or public speeches. These situations are “one-sided” because we are the only ones that feel stress from them. The same rules pretty much apply to stressful situations that only include one person as well.
View things from a broader perspective. Although you may be terrified of public speaking, your audience usually will not notice if you are able to deliver your points clearly and keep them engaged. If you are nervous about an upcoming interview, try to view yourself from the employer’s standpoint. You may realize that the employer would like to hear more about your ability to do the job, rather than your personal backstory.
Viewing things from multiple perspectives can allow us to make some necessary changes that we may not have realized before. This gives us a better handle on the situation, therefore reducing stress.
Take a break from the situation
Taking a break from the situation can mean anything from taking a walk around the block to turning on your favorite song. Oftentimes, stressful situations include a demand for an immediate reaction or answer. It’s important to remember that you are not obligated to answer any situation immediately, and you always have the right fully think everything through first before responding.
Taking a break from the situation can allow you to think about the series of events in your own calm mental environment. You may come to some new realizations at this point. Overall, taking a mental break gives us the space and clarity we need to make educated decisions. That’s where the term “I’ll sleep on it” comes from. When our mind is refreshed, we are significantly more prepared to tackle any task at hand.
Stressful situations may not be completely unavoidable. However, by taking the right steps and adjusting your mindset, you will be sure to reduce the impact of these situations and ultimately gain control of them.
