3 Reasons Why To Ask Better Questions at Your Next Job Interview

You already know YOU will have to answer questions, but… what happens when the interviewer turns it over to you?

You know, that “do you have any questions for me?” moment.

We will tell you why you must take advantage of this stage of the interview, and how it can set you apart for all other candidates.

It shows the hiring manager you are interested in the job.

No questions may look like a lack of interest and may kill the rapport you have built with the hiring manager during the interview. On the contrary, asking questions shows you are engaged and, at least, want to show enthusiasm for the job.

To make it easier, make sure you prepare in advance several questions. It’s normal for many answers to be naturally provided during the conversation throughout the interview. Make sure you don’t end up asking something that was already explained!

Now that you demonstrated you are interested in the job – what can you ask that can make a difference for you?

This is where you assess whether this is the job you are looking for.

Remember the interview is not only for the hiring manager to evaluate whether you will be a good employee, but t is also for you to assess whether the job is great for you!

You may also be switching jobs, leaving behind a job you like for one you think is better. This is your moment to verify this.

Think of the elements you like in your current job, and ask questions that will help you assess whether this one has them too. (Or the other way round – think of why you want to leave your current job, and try finding out if the same situation is present in the potential new one).

Some elements to consider can be company culture, company values, work-life balance, career opportunities, training and flexibility.

So, you verified this is in fact the job you were looking for, now what can you do to set yourself apart from all other candidates?

Use questions strategically to showcase a skill that can set you apart and was not mentioned during the interview.

Maybe the interview was amazing, all questions were answered on point, but by the end you feel that you were not able to showcase all of your skills.

Here’s your chance to ask questions that could help you steer the conversation towards that topic.

For example, if you are a tech-savvy person you can ask which type of applications the role manages. By starting that conversation, you can mention how to helped implement a new system in your previous job, or how you helped improve a certain KPI through better use of technology.
