Even the most talented and experienced candidates can fail to impress a hiring manager, and guess why? They lack the proper interview techniques required to make that first impression.

Interview techniques and skills are learned, and you must master them before appearing in front of an employer. In this blog post, we discussed the most effective techniques based on the type of interview you have to appear in. So, scroll down and keep learning.

Interview Techniques: What Are They and Why Do They Matter?

Interview techniques are the steps and practices you use to convince hiring managers that you are the best fit for the role they are looking to fill. These techniques are used at various stages of the interview, depending on the type and location of the interview.

Learning interview techniques can boost your confidence and prepare you for the process. Furthermore, these techniques can help you communicate your professionalism and expertise to hiring managers.

Effective Techniques By Different Formats of Interview

The interview techniques you use depend on various factors, including the role you are interviewing for, the location of the interview, and the interviewer. To make it simpler for you, we have discussed some techniques according to the type of interview:

Phone Call or Audio Call Interview

An on-call interview is typically conducted as a first step in the hiring process. When a company goes through your resume or portfolio and finds it attractive, they may call you to get to know more about you. If you are well-prepared for a phone interview, you may be invited for an in-person interview. Here are a few techniques for an on-call interview:

  •  If you received an email or message informing you of the call schedule, take advantage of this time to research the company. Review the job description and prepare the best answers to prove yourself as the ideal fit for the position.
  • Practice common interview questions like “tell us more about yourself” or “what makes you the right candidate for our company”.
  • Make hard copies of all necessary documents, such as academic papers, resumes, and certificates, and keep them nearby so you can access the information if needed.
  • Make sure to sit in a quiet place so you can answer all questions with focus and avoid any possible distractions during the interview.

Video Call Interview

Recently, many companies have introduced video call interviews as an initial interview process. Video interviews are also held for hiring candidates who work from home. This latest advancement has been replacing on-call interviews, as they allow employers to talk to candidates face-to-face.

Some hiring managers may also request that you record the interview or create a video of your responses to interview questions to watch later. Follow the interview techniques mentioned below for video interviews:

  • Make video calls to friends or family to ensure your internet connection is stable and fast.
  • Also, test your laptop or computer’s camera and microphone to prevent technical problems during the interview.
  • Practice common interview questions like “tell us more about yourself” or “what makes you the right candidate for our company”.
  • Dress according to the culture of the hiring company.
  • Take interview calls in a quiet environment with a neutral background.
  • Try to carry formal body language like sitting straight, using proper hand gestures, and nodding to the instructions.

In-Person Interview

You must have passed the initial on-call or video-call interview if you have been called for an in-person interview. Now the hiring company has some basic knowledge of your skills and experience and is looking forward to learning more about you. Here are some helpful tips and techniques for in-person interviews:

  • Dress as mentioned in the job description, or according to the culture of the company.
  • Act nicely and engage with the staff. Pass a gentle smile and shake hands with the interviewer to show a nice gesture.
  • Stay confident and energetic during the interview and give brief but detailed responses to all questions.
  • Show your passion and enthusiasm for the position and communicate how you match the requirements of the company.
  • Keep a hard copy of all necessary documents in a folder. For example, your resume, academic record, certificates, and experience record.

Final Word

With so much competition in the hiring process, the correct interview techniques and strategies can help you land your dream job.  We hope our blog helped provide some effective interview techniques you may need to give an interview.
